Does anybody know basketball terminology in Putonghua? I Teach in a middle school in the boondocks of Hunan (no other foreigners) and have been asked to join the basketball team. Games are fine but the practices..... Just some basics would help me understand the coach a little more. I have been here for a couple of years, so my listen comprehension is ok but specific terminology is a language of it's own. None of the players are past the hello stage in English and the English teachers have no clue. (They are not too far past the hello stage either)

When and How plays for the English Department basketball team. They never win but that's another matter...
Want sort of words do you need? I'll get him to translate them for you.
Hao zhou = good shot
qu jia = out of bounds
These are the ones I know but will get the kid to do the real terms.

Thanks for the reply. Terms like pass, rebound, pick and roll, zone (defense), full court, and anything else you can think of. If I could understand these basics I can get them to start speaking Putonghua rather than the local lingo. My students don't know and I'm sure nobody here knows the Chinese word for 'pass'

Do your students/teammates even pass? The impromptu basketball games I've seen have players who think they have MJ-like abilities and just drive, drive, drive to the basket. All the players crowd within the three, there's usually five guys in the paint, and they all chase the ball like it's a free english lesson! Good luck, and post up any terminology you find as I can prolly use them as well.

Welcome, Stil!
My company has a Sports English course. I'll try to find out if it has basketball terminology.
Are you a Dune fan, by any chance?

Well, Students never pass. (except examinations but that's all from cheating - different topic) but the teachers do. Actually the P.E teachers actually play a game that I'm some what familiar with and are less 'soft' Yes I'm a fan of 'Dune' - where did that come from?

My user name? Aah, Stilgar. I didn't think of that because the name isn't from the book.
At my University (Canada) I used to study in one of the bars. Libraries were too quiet for me. I couldn't concentrate. One of my friends used to come in and say "You still here?" Then he shortened his greeting to "still?" and the name stuck. One year I joined a football pool and the exceptionally bright waitress wrote my name down as stil.
There you have it - The history of my username.
Stilgar is a pretty good name though eh? (Canadiana)

You concentrate in noise? WOW. WOW WOW Yeah. When it is too quite, then any little noise gets my attention. When it's very noisy It just all becomes white noise to me. I can't seem to stop concentrating in China. ;D

AJ, I got degrees in Physics and Maths mostly studying while waiting for my next cue in the green rooms of ongoing theatrical productions. I'm starting to like this guy.

AJ: Oh! Can I add some too? (I don't play much - I'm just highly curious. Stil should prolly correct my newbie phrases anyways) I added a few, then I found a site which added a lot more: www.coachesclipboard.net/Terminology.shtmlreferee (or rather the shorter 'ref' in chinese) whistle jerseys 3-point line perimeter wing (referring to the right & left side) low post / high post top of the key free throw line Key (aka 'the paint' referring to the painted area on the court) baseline point out of bounds court (referring to the basketball court) half-court full-court ball-side weak-side back-door center guard forward shoot shot jumpshot hookshot fade-away shot layup rebound foul (foul list is huge - wanna help here stil?) set play playbook pick and roll screen give and go drive defense defend offense attack man-to-man defense switch shadow (shadowing) zone coverage transition trap full court press sprint fastbreak up-the-court down-the-court transition 2 on 1 / 3 on 2 (is there specific terminology to this?) cut (many cuts incl front, back, V, curl, button) fake (fake the shot, fake to your left) PS> You know what, that list is too long. Ah, don't worry about my list - but do you think I can get some terms for ice hockey?

Great work Arlis. I can deliver the basketball Putong hua on Monday evening. I can try ice hockey but I'm not sure my kid knows anything about it. I guess I could show him a downloaded game or something but I don't think it's a sure thing like basketball. I'll give it a try so you never know.

You say that like it was something strange. Anyone would do anything for a can of Kalamata olives. Jar, rather.

Correct you? Hey I just play. No one ever said I knew anything. With foul, everyone seems to say dashou (hit hand) or fengui sp? (have no idea but when i say it's understood) As for 2 on 1/ 3 on 2, there is terminology but it has nothing to do with basketball
