They're so ignorant, they run it so badly, it smells, and it's got so far away to go.
But (fiil in the blank):

but...they are trying to change and it's exciting to be here watching and participating.
but...the people, individuals that is, are warm, generous to a fault, welcoming, and friendly. I'm family.

but man, what a great and exciting place to be in. (Just came back from visiting a bunch of caves, feeding the monkeys, wrestling with the monkeys for my wife's handbag, and eating some kind of special local spicy lemon duck thing. What a great day.)
Oh, yeah, and Cantonese food gets my vote for best food on earth so far, although real Greek gets in a close second, beating Guangxi and any other Chinese I have tried so far. Although even then, some dishes are right up there. So is Cajun. Or good Italian. Poo, food is great.

- The people are beyond kind when you get to know them
- The food is fabulous. Northern/western spicy in particular!
- The country is big enough that there is an incredible amount of fantastic scenery to be seen.
- There is an immense liveliness in the streets that makes every walk fascinating.
- It's cheap to live here! Food, personal service, clothes, travel, dongxi.
- Everyday is an adventure.

But you can join Raouls, and look at my artistically inspired avatar, and think, "Where else but China, can a foreigner be so insane to do such a thing?"

....
I can rent a kick-ass apartment for 600RMB a month.
I can buy a bag of (almost) roast potatoes on the street for 1 yuan
I can walk to school every morning and see a (smiling) mei nv every ten metres.
I can walk across the street from my apartment and buy anything I need, including good beer for 2 yuan.
If I ever get sick of my lousy ji dan and xi hong shi, I can take a ten minute, 5 mao, bus ride to metro and stare at the cheese selection for half an hour, then pick up some cheddar and sausages.
The chinese students are really friendly, and the foreign students are cool. Especially the koreans.
Hotpot is the best thing in the world.
I can drink beer on the street for pennies, go into a nightclub free of charge, come out, drink more 3 yuan beer and then go back in until 5am.
Life here is so cheap and easy ;D

but ... Students who really want to learn make it worthwhile. A generation or two from now when the rest of the world is into the "China thing" we'll have great stories to tell of the Wild West days. They have butt kicking literature, and a lot of it is availalbe in China, in decent translations into English, and at prices that would't get wholesale paper back home. Some of the people are fantastic. Once you set up an initial business relationship, they appriciate repeat business enought to give you an easy time of it. China's public sector is one of the best employers in East Asia. Not the highest paying, but legit government run schools can sometimes be the least nightmarish places to work (not always of course.) Don't believe me? Come to Japan. I'll show you. They'll host the 2008 Olympics and the 2010 world's fair. (HA! Someone had to say it. ) You can buy an anime series on DVD for $1 US, where the same series costs $90 US in the States and $700 in Japan. You can't get FOX News. There are no Jehova's Witnesses. Cheap broadband. The Same Tang Dynasty Show Produced 600 times is so bland that it's hypnotic, and great MST3K material. So much to see, do, and learn.
