Hi,
An off-the-wall question... Does anybody know anything regarding the World Health Organisation and China? More specifically the roles and opportunities for Environmental Health Officers in these parts?
As in, are there EHO people here? Where are they usually? What do they do? How long do they stay? What do they deal with?
Anyone have any info...

Does she work with the WHO? Or is she an Environmental Health Officer? If so, I have a few questions I'd like to ask...

Splutter, splutter, splutter ... the 3 stooges? THE THREE STOOGES??
Abbott and Costello thank you very much. 3 stooges had their good points, and they may have, or at least 2 of them, may have done the "Who's on first?" sketch but for mine it's an Abbott and Costello original. Apparently it was a routine they did back in their vaudeville days, before they made the big time.
I sometimes supervise/umpire softball games at school. I never fail to ask the question of the students "Who's on first?" Usually goes straight over their heads.

I want to teach that sketch at school. Lei Shan found it, so we have the audio version. It goes really quickly and I'm not sure my students would pick up all the words. I'll need to get the written version (or transcribe it myself), then teach the rules of baseball, before I can teach the humor involved. So far, that's seemed like too much work. But I think my senior kids would get it.
Sorry to participate in the hijack, Edges. I have no information to assist you in your WHO questions except to echo Con and George. Babe might be a good resource for you.

So, is WHO responsible for this latest at China Daily? Looks like Beijing and company may be trying to preclude (and I'm very roughly paraphrasing Raoul's statement) "training the baiju swilling buttheads of tomorrow" or some such. Darn, was hoping that baiju swilling, staggering cartoon character would paste.
Oh well, see it under "top life news" section.
China banning alcohol sale to minors By Echo Shan (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2005-11-10 14:30
China has come up with a first nationwide regulations on managing alcohol sales, including a ban on selling alcohol to minors, China Youth Daily reports.
Regulations banning selling alcohol to minors will be put into practice January 1, 2006. [baidu] The "Alcohol Circulation Management Regulations" enacted Thursday by the nation's Ministry of Commerce are set to get into effect January 1, 2006.
The regulations set up systems to supervise alcohol venders, and include a registration and tracing system.
The new rules also stipulate that trade administration departments at all government levels cannot block or undermine the legal circulation of alcohol products. This is being widely viewed as an effort by the central government to curb protectionism in regional trade.
The report did not say how those who don't obey the new regulations would be punished.
The action follows a recent trend in some major urban areas. In March of this year, the Shanghai municipal government carried out a rule banning the sale of alcohol to minors, the Xinhua news agency said.
According to that regulation, selling cigarettes and alcohol to minors is banned.
Adults cannot help minors buy such products, nor are they permitted to smoke in school classrooms, libraries or any location where children are frequently present. All stores selling cigarettes and alcohol are required to post "No Cigarette and Alcohol Sales to Minor" warning signs.

This will surely stop minors from drinking alcohol and smoking. Look at what a success these kind of laws and campaigns have been in the west

Actually, you can call me naive, I think China has LESS of a problem with underage drinking and smoking than what I saw in USAnia and Canada. There are kids who smoke at the high school where I work, but from my observations, lots less than a comparable sized school in Florida.
Once I saw a group of 4 of my senior students at a restaurant at lunch time. The two boys were sharing a bottle of beer. They were celebrating a birthday. They were probably 18 at the time, so technically not underage. However, this was unusual behavior for them. The beer was in honor of the occasion and it wasn't to excess. Can kids in the west say that?

I'm inclined to agree with you, Ruth. 6 and a half days a week in school, when would they find the time? Answer: college.
