Oh, another girlie ;D Welcome, Dolly! So, the female power here is growing stronger. Soon our poor males would have nothing but to abide by our will... Hmmm, sounds rather amusing

Bloody Canadians are so dam polite it's so difficult to get them to be rude. I know it's difficult for him, we sahould encourage him. When he says stupic Aussies I know that he is not talking about me naturally. But George might feel offended

Whoa...another hyper avatar. Dolly's and Lotus' cats can dance with each other. And there's always George's chicken doing its thing.
My fav is still Gretch's penguin.
Con, you've done it now. Not wise to rile the Ozzies.

pick on anyone you want sugar pie! newbies benefit from a "get out of jail free" card until they reach 100 posts and then.......... let's just say i have not been the same since i reached that plateau. George ain't that bad by the way... he can be a jolly good chap as long as you don't talk to him about "heng" "pie" "na"......

Dolly, of course you can pick on Con. It'd make a pleasant change from picking on George, which is kinda the national sport in the saloon.

George ain't that bad by the way... he can be a jolly good chap as long as you don't talk to him about "heng" "pie" "na"...... is that dirty? I just ordered my passport. Now I need to know something from the central committee (THAT'S YOU WANKERS) after all the reading up on vaccinations I came up with the idea that I can just get it all done there. Is that correct? Should I bring a prescription for hypodermic needles? there is extensive discussion, but nothing conclusive (ah, such is life by committee). And on a totally unrelated subject, how do I grab the cool smilies? oh, cool, just figured it out meself.

Prolly better to get your vaccinations done before you leave. I Think you can get needles over the counter without need of a prescription. Not sure as I've never tried.

It's probably better to get your vaccinations done there - but I wouldn't worry too much about needles here . Each time I have had something done, they open a new needle for me - and then I get to keep it! Cost about 2Y.

Dolly, get your hepatitis A and B shots NOW. It takes time to get the series done. Depends where you are heading whether you need anything else or not. That's all I got and I'm still alive.
'Heng', 'pie', and 'na' are not dirty words unless you are George and having fits about learning how to write in Chinese. They are the names of some of the strokes you have to learn. Think kindergarten and learning how to write 'big A - little a'. Nolefan was in the intermediate class at a bootcamp language camp some of us went to over Spring Festival. George and I were in kindergarten.

Something finally clicked for me in understanding and speaking Chinese - about 2 weeks ago. No more the gob-smacked idiot look on my face when being spoken to (well, maybe a little...).
I've been using a bit of Chinese in my High School classes and it works wonders - particularly when I can understand some of the cursing and jokes the kids throw around and respond to them.
Writing my Chinese name on the board in hanzi gets a good response too. Some of them have mentioned that they feel more motivated when they understand that many of us are learning their language while they are learning ours. Some just sleep.

I'm using the little bit of Chinese I know too. The gal in the copy shop speaks enough English to get the job done for me, but I'm trying to ask for what I need in Chinese. Today it was copy page 44. Si shi si sucks bigtime for pronunciation for me, but she praised me anyway - after she'd repeated it about 5 times so I could practice. A-N-D today I copied a word in Chinese characters from the dictionary so I could ask for what I wanted at the store. Bootcamp was a real boost for me.
But I'm still in kindergarten.
Another cool thing - as I play games with my private kids they repeat the target language in English THEN they translate to each other. Wish they wouldn't do that, but it seems to be how they learn. The cool thing is that I recognize some of the words now and it's helping me with my Chinese.

Heya Dolly! I'm a Canuck headed for Suzhou and the Boland School for the May 8th TEFL course. I just wanted to say that these guys helped me out alot with the questions I have had about China. Raoul promised me a rebel-rousing of a good time once I get over there and he even planned a "Welcome Party" for me...I am arriving on the 1st, just in time for his annual May Holiday party... If you aren't in the May 8th course as I am, I can always post my feelings/impressions about the school on here somewhere... Welcome, once again, and in this bar never let your guard down...crazy Aussies running around unchained and unguarded...
