It seems that a far higher number of foreigners teaching in China smoke in higher numbers than the average in their country of origin.
Is this correct?
Why?

Don't know why but it's true---a lot of teachers take up smoking in Asia. Many said to me they would quit when they go home---I dont doubt it.
Perhaps the drinking? and fancy dinners etc. I know back home I have cut down a lot simply because you can't smoke anywhere..
(I read Thailand are going to ban smoking in bars--End of the world as we know it surely.)

I hadn't smoked in 10 years before coming here..now I'm a pack a day manI think a large part of it was missing smoking something else.Also...the Chinese greeting of thrusting cigarettes in your face every 10 minutes.I would say drinking more sure has a lot to do with it as well.
But what the hell...the air and the traffic are likely to kill me first.

I was a pack a day smoker at 40 years old. I quit cold turkey and have now been in China for 2.5 years. I have had several thousand cigs thrust at me. I have smoked about 5. Every time I think of starting again I remember what my breathing was like back then. I just say NO!

boy, some people (read: George) are really sensitive... and in line with the thread topic, after seeing what cigs did to my mother over her lifetime, I am NEVER gonna smoke... unless I'm on fire...

Good on you GG my mother died of a smoking related illness but she had weak lungs. Us kids would say to her, "Mum you shouldn't smoke your cough would put a Chinese rickshaw puller to shame," Mum would say it's not true", I have bronchitus well that is even more reason not to smoke. Mum's cough would be our morning alarm.

Con it is not easy to give up I gave up for 5 years and never thought I would ever smoke again. I think if I get serious about giving up I will take myself camping and inhale the fresh air to remind myself about what lungs are for.
I am watching the Bob Dylan DVD for the 3rd time it is rivetting. I totally recommend it

Come on guys...no one respects a quitter. So I'll lose face Decurso. Finally quit 4 years ago after 20 years of smoking due to ghe gum thing noted in Need a dentist/tooth whitening threads. Yes, kids, cigs not only stain your teeth they contribute to gum disease. I occasionally miss 'em, but I'll just remain a quitter where cigs are concerned. But, having been a consumate bartender, I still carry a lighter. Please, let me light that for you.

Smoking is evil and all smokers should have to eat their own ashtrays.
My dad was dying of smoking related illnesses for many years, but the cancer got him first.

Smoking is evil and all smokers should have to eat their own ashtrays. Well, I hope no one makes me eat the waste products associated with my vices: candy bar wrappers come immediately to mind. I grew up with a smoking father and a mother whose words somehow made my dad the evil one rather than the smoking habit. I don't want to be that way. I choose not to smoke. I'm really, really, really glad my husband quit. I prefer not to be around smoke, but will adapt if spending time with smokers (who can be really great people if you get to know them) is important to me. I don't preach to people about how bad smoking is for them. Too much like hearing my mother's voice come out of my mouth and I figure anyone intelligent enough to buy the things and light them already knows all the health risks.

I figure anyone intelligent enough to buy the things and light them already knows all the health risks. It won't surprise many here to learn that I, at the first hint that a student of mine smokes, stop the class and launch a tirade against smoking that finishes the period. The Dean supports me in this and begs me not to reveal to students that he smokes and is too weak to quit. I loudly tell the young women in the class to deselect men who smoke as being too stupid to bear their children. The young men cower and turn red.

I just reread Ruth's post and want to jump in and second her thought above. I would gladly eat candy bar wrappers if the menu would stop there. Holy crap, what a thought.

I am going to use that argument, Hamish.
People who smoke are too stupid to father your children, I like it. The girls here will happily agree, they hate smoking.
Heh.
Funnily enough, my wife's family are entirely non-smokers - father, brother, inlaws, the lot. This was very happy news for me, although statistically out there for this country.
Oh, and I don't really mind people who smoke. I hate 'smoking' but the helpless addicts are to be pitied, not chastised.

I didn't think it was possible to quit in China, but I gave up cigarettes as a New Years Resolution this year and have (amazingly) held firm. I was always a miserable smoker, but all previous methods to quit (including hypnotherapy) didn't work. This time, I noticed that I didn't have the same withdrawal symptoms that used to weaken my resolve on previous cold turkey efforts.
I still drink too much and could lose a few pounds, but boy am I glad I quit smoking. Somehow, being in China works as a check against me relapsing- When I see the shockingly bad dentistry, hear the coughing and hacking, and see my heavy smoker colleagues huff and puff walking up a flight of stairs, I am reminded why I gave up.
But I keep an ashtray in my apartment for guests who wish to step out onto the veranda for a smoke. I've never liked anti-smoking zealots, and believe me growing up in California you come across a lot of them.

Abides, I quit in December on the Pneumonia Plan: double pneumonia, to be exact. They should market this back home: it's foolproof.
But I fell off the wagon whle having problems at work.
