We are going to spend the first week of June in Shanghai whilst the school is cleared for the College entrance exams.
We haven't been to Shanghai before, so can anyone suggest a hotel which is handy, nice and reasonable.
And perhaps some suggestions for some things to see and do as this will be our second last week in China before returning home.

Well, I can't help you on the hotels, or even things to do in Shanghai, but since you will be so close, may I recommend at least a daytrip to Suzhou to meet as many of the crowd as are willing/able to hang out with you?

Hotels in Shanghai - I found a good one for about 190 RMB per night 5km from the airport. Standard was good, filtered water, airconditioning that worked, clean, modern and nice. No one spoke English, though.
And yeah do the day trip. Raoul can show you the baijiu vomit stains on his ceiling.

Yes Ruth and Mr Nobody, we are intending to take a day trip to Suzhou.
Of course if someone suggests it is better to stay, for instance, in a place like Suzhou , and do day trips into Shanghai and the surrounding places, then so much the better.

Wow...
As pointed out in another thread, the hotel in Suzhou where I put the partygoers is decent, cheap, and has an excellent location. PM me details and I can book the room for you; might be able to wrangle a discount.
I'm out of the loop on Shanghai hotels now and I no longer have access to the Shanghai University hotel I used to put guests in. For Shanghai hotels, I suggest you call eLong....the number is in the Links page. You can specify a budget and a location and they can usually accommodate you. Decent rooms can be found in Shanghai relatively cheaply.
Must-dos in Shanghai? Not that many. Stroll the Bund and the old residential parts of the French Concession. Go up in the Jinmao and/or Oriental Pearl towers....maybe one in the day and one at night. Take the day's final (evening) cruise on the Huangpu River so you catch all the lights. Walk around the West Nanjing Road area. Some of the small art galleries and the Propaganda Art Museum are good. Shop and eat, eat and shop.
Don't subject yourself to Yu Yuan Temple...too commercialized, too many peddlars and beggars and pickpockets. Give the Shanghai Museum a miss unless you're REALLY into green Chinese pottery. The Aquarium is so-so...not terrible.
Actually, one of my favorite things to do in Shanghai is to hire a taxi, and just drive around gaping at the beast.

Moi, I like the Longmen Hotel, right next to Shanghai Railway Station. Prices are medium, say 300RMB night, but I'm guessing now. If you're coming by train well it's obvious why it's a good spot. From there you can hop on the underground and Shanghai is your oyster. Near the Longmen are 2 parts to a Holiday Inn. One at least does a typical western breakfast, if that's what you're after.
Do Nanjing Donglu and the Bund. Last time I was in Nanjing Donglu I thought it was peopled largely by touts, but still try it. Bund worth a walk along.
Best little whorehouse area to wander around in Shanghai is Huaihai Lu and the area just south. (The old French Concession).
Maybe do the Maglev, world's fastest train, to Pudong airport and back but it is kinda underwhelming.
I think I posted stuff in the city specific thread which says much the same as this, but hey, this gets my count up allows me to help a fellow saloonite.
The first few times I was in Shanghai I never went to Pudong, but it's not bad. For another underwhelming experience go by the tunnel that starts just north of where Nanjing Donglu meets the bund. The experience won't scare the socks off you.
I reckon I'm confirming a lot of what Raoul has just said so, in all seriousness, that tells you something.
Have a good one, Oz.
PS and if you want to do a tower at night, better make it snappy. I know Jinmao closes at the wickedly late hour of 9-30pm.

Yeah, the Longmen is not bad. There are several hotels around the train station in this class. Still, eLong is usually a good idea...
If you're flying, 'Gronk, definitely try and route through Hong Qiao airport. Pudong Airport is an expensive, distant pain in the ass...don't let them fly you there.

My friend and fellow teacher, Eileen knows several good and quite inexpensive hotels in Shanghai. She goes there frequently. Hotels will be 200 or less, clean, and convenient. I'll ask her tomorrow and post the info here.

We ended up at the Nanjing Hotel just off Nanjing Lu, great big room for 350rmb...with absolutely the softest bed we have ever slept in....bliss.
Tried to get to Suzhou....after 30 minutes trying to find the Shanghai Station from the Shanghai Station Metro (couldn't believe that the bomb site that the Metro exit poured us onto could have been The Shanghai Railway Station), then to be told that there was only one train, for which we would have to wait 2 hours, we gave up and had 6 pairs of prescription sunnies made for 120Y each at the myriad of eyewear places under the station instead.
