I'm going to live/teach in China for a year--leaving July 8th. The Travel Immunization clinic recommended we get shots for japanese encephalitis. The price is ridiculous ($340 for the 3 part series). Any one out there concur with the Doctor? He was kind of a jerk, too, so I need a second opinion to see that he's not duping us for more $$.
Thanks!

Hey Molly,
This disease is mostly found in rural areas, but if you're going to be living within the JE zone- which is most of East China- then I recommend you get the shots.
$340 may be a bitch, but it's nothing compared to actually contracting JE. This is not a pretty disease.
Most tourists don't need this shot, but they are not going to be living here for long. You are, and the advice you need is different than tourist advice.
More info on immunizations, with an emphasis on JE including a map of the zone, can be found in the Library section. I'll bump it up for you.

Chengdu laboratories JE immunisation is much cheaper here, is effective from one shot not a series, and this is the ONLY one shot immunisation. The ones from outside of china are actually less effective when I researched it. THis is one case where the local product (if you get a real one) is better. If you are worried, get it in HK. Remember the brand. It is the only one that works like this. Other Chinese brands are the same as those outside of China, needing a series over time.
Same for Hep shots - the series needs to be completed, one shot doesn't do the job. THis is also much much cheaper here.
BTW, I didn't bother, but I should have. JE isn't a very big here problem, unlike India at the moment. I concentrated on other ones like tetanus, hep, things like that. There was enough to pay already.

That's really expensive man. Over here in Holland the price is 52 euros for 3 injections. We could be a bit cheaper here than at your place, but a difference of about 270 dollars would just be a bit too much.
Also: they don't usually recommend taking the shots unless you're going to live in rural areas for longer periods of time. Are you going to do that?
Hep A and B are important though.
I wouldn't go for it if I were you. Best take the shots in China like senor Nobody said.

Papua New Guinea for 2 years, Thailand for 5 1/2 years and here in China for just on 3 years, including 6 months in a remote village in Sichuan. I've never had any shots; although I did take antimalarial medicine in PNG.
An American business man makes a trip to China and during his visit he samples a local cocotte. Three weeks after returning to the U.S. his appendage starts to turn green and scaly. He consults a G.P. who tells him that he has Chinese syphilis for which there is no known cure. The G.P. refers him to a surgeon who recommends immediate amputation. The poor guy is almost in shock. He tells the surgeon that he needs time to think. He visits a friend and after being told of the problem, the friend suggests that he consult a Chinese doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese doctor confirms the diagnosis but tells him that amputation is not necessary. "These western doctors! All the want to do is cut, cut, cut! Waste of time! Waste of money!", bemoaned the Chinese doctor. "It's such a great relief to hear that!" said the man. "So, what should I do?" "Just wait a week. It will fall off by itself."
