In the UK, we don't have spiders or snakes that can kill us. Or aligators or anything dangerous so we never need to think about it. I was thinking last night (dangerous), and wondering whether China has any harmful creatures that I might come into contact with that could kill me, or make me seriously ill. I know they have wild mammals, but I doubt I'll see many of them in Shenzhen. I plan to travel a little... so who knows! So snakes, spiders, scorpions and lizards. Which ones wish to kill me? ;D

Oberton,
Check the Venomous Vermin thread.
Everyone has assured me that most of the poisonous beasties have either been eaten or ground up as medicinal ingredients. On the other hand, if you want to meet some rattlesnakes, visit me here in Sunny Florida and I'll introduce you to them. :-)

Coming from a land of crawling venomous nasties [and thats just the politicians] I can assure you you are pretty safe. Yes, there are venomous snakes out in the countryside, but they generally get eaten before they bite anyone.
One thing no-one has mentioned is rabies. That monkey you don't have any food for that bites you in recompense may be a carrier. The same applies to dogs, rats, cats. You can get immunized. I did, and never got bitten, so it seems to work. The risks are greater out in the sticks.

Yeah. In general communicable disease is a much bigger threat than fang or venom. And people are a much bigger threat for this than animals.

I remember when my Scottish in laws visited me in Aussie and were freaking out about the ants and flies. When I took them to see the friendly kangaroos who you could shake a paw with, the bastard was covered in ticks and that put them off. The British and the Chinese have very similar attitudes to bugs and stuff. Except the Chinese will eat it. Respect

I dunno...ever seen that stuff the British eat? Bugs and stuff might be a step in the right direction! I had the joy and honour of being fed Cicadas at a big lunchon the day before I left China. They told me they are very popular and are very good for the eyesight. I can't see any better but then I only ate 2. They weren't bad, crunchy and toasty flavour. But.....

Hello Oberton --
Take a look at my reply over on venomous vermin. There really is a kind of small snake in SZ that can kill you -- the green bamboo viper. There are other ones, that have gotten my students, as well. I posted a bit more about this just now on the other topic.

Spotted Dick? Blancmange? Marmite? Blood Puddings/Black Puddings? Kidney Pie? Eggs and sausages covered with baked beans (USA, pork & beans)...for breakfast? An apparent minimum cooking time of 5 hours for everything? I could go on... but I can't go on. It's a lot like the Shanghai area, only more so...great place, lovely people, and terrible local food. I'm reminded of the opening lines of the grand finale of Frank Zappa's 200 Motels, as sung by Theo Bikel... Lord, have mercy on the people in England For the terrible food these people must eat. And may The Lord have mercy on the fate of this movie And God bless the mind of the man in the street...

Do you mean besides the blood pudding and kidney pie of England? Let me remind you of Scotland's contribution to culinary crimes against humanity - HAGGIS!!!!

No no, I'm not bringing Scotland into this at all. At least English food is still technically considered food.

Meester Dook
Knowing your real family name, I suspect you have some Cornish descent. My great grandpa had the same name. So, some Cornish delicacies: The Cornish pastie. Pastry filled with mostly finely chopped root veg, maybe some ground meat, folded with a crimp, baked and eaten by hand. Hearty and healthy, and miners' food. They'd use the crimp to hold it, then throw that away. I ate them in Cornwall, and continue to do so here in South Aussie, where there is a strong Cornish connection. Fantastic in winter!
Stargazie Pie. A weird one. A pie plate with mashed potato and sliced boiled eggs, topped with pastry, into which are inserted several small fish, heads on, eyes pointed to the stars.

Oh, Jeez, we're probably related, then. I'm pretty much a British Isles mongrel, mostly Scots and Irish, so anything is possible. Cornish pasties are fine. Fish heads and foods containing fish heads are best fed to the cat (which in turn is scheduled for medical experimentation later today) or simply thrown in the garbage.

The Cornish pastie, a fine meal and let us not forget sheperd's pie. Which we always had on Monday, after the lamb roast on Sunday. I have never eaten Haggis, although I lived in Scotland for 5 years because I was a very strict vegetarian. But my son says it is delicious and he has very fine palate so I believe him.

That's a standard joke the Scots play on unsuspecting people. "Oh yes, it's wonderful - here, have a bite."
Haggis Recipe
First, get a sheep. Remove the wool. It's useful. Remove the hide. It's useful. Remove all the edible meat. Take everything left except for the bones (brains, eyeballs, organs considered inedible outside the British Isles, etc), mix with outmeal, grind it up and stuff it into the stomach. Bake until you are so hungry that you'll eat anything. Serve with enough Scotch that your tastebuds are anesthetized.

Damn it, you should have told me earlier to save the stomach. It was the first thing I ran through the damn grinder! So, what am I supposed to do with this mess now?
