Has anyone got the physical examination record obligatory for a z-visa after arriving in China? Is it expensive there?
Here in Germany I would have to pay around 100€. I'd prefer that even if it's more expensive, but perhaps I won't get an appointment in time.

Here for the full exam is 500RMB. That's jsut in Hubei. Other provinces might have slightly different prices.

Its something your school should pay for. Check with them. Also, even if you get it done in Germany, your school may insist you get it in China anyway. Its no big deal. Chest Xray, blood test, vision test, teeth [why? you're here to teach people, not bite them]

I had it done in Canada the first time and still had it redone in China.
Had it done again this summer for this visa. Cost was 308RMB. Took less than 1 hour.

400 rmb here, about an hour. You get a certificate to show you aren't rabid or carrying pervert diseases of any kind, like body peircings or AIDS.
School usually pays, and it is good until you actually go back home. You don't have to do it for each school if you stay longer.
However, so far I have not reliably heard of anyone successfully doing it in their own country and NOT have to get it done here again, although apparently if you use the embassy recommended doctor and/or get it in Chinese and stamped in red, then it works.

I'm damn reliable. First visit I had it done in OZ, and got the Z visa issued in Canberra. I used my local GP and he didn't know any Chinese. He did ask why the m'kay they needed most of this stuff though. Second time I got it done in China. That way the school foots the bill too.

Sorry, I meant that getting it done in your own country and NOT having it done in China again. Or do you mean two separate trips?

Yes. Shenme? I mean first time I only had it done in Oz, 2nd time only in China.

Ok, I stand corrected.
Maybe things have changed since your first trip, depending on how long ago? You are the only person who I know of that managed that at all, unless it was like, 10 years ago or something. Did they stop?

I had my medical done in Oz. I didn't have to get the full medical done in China, only certain blood tests that weren't performed in my Australian medical. What the blood tests were for, I have absolutely no idea.
I had to get the medical done in order to get my 'z' visa. Yet here, I had to get more tests done here. *shrug*
Other teachers that were with me at teh time that came over on a 'L' visa or 'F' visa didn't have to do the medical back home to get thier Visa. They had the full medical here.

Blood test is largely for HIV.
Was your medical performed by the recommended doctors of the Embassy, or just a local GP? Looks like I have been talking to the wrong people again.

I had a medical 2005 and this year for my experts renewal. I;ve been told that if I stay another year after, I will have to get another one.
I hate being treated like a lab rat. The instruments are all cold, and the staff spoke some English, but they were not nice. No smiles, very unfriendly.

I had one before I arrived (2004) - it was re-done by the uni (they paid) when I got here. Haven't had to do anbother since except voluntarily when the uni entered me into a marathon (all 5kms of it!). This included when I changed universities.

Beijing - 600+. I never did medical at home because I get my Z visa in China. But if you work for a kindergarten here full-time in Beijing you might need to do an extra medical check-up that differs from Z visa one and it costs like less than 50RMB.

My city is 500 RMB. When I was in Wuxi, 4 teachers had the medical done in their home countries and even had the results translated into Chinese and they still made the do the medical here. I'd advise getting it here, it's no big deal.

Thanks everyone. That was a lot of useful information.
Good news also. It seems that even the most expensive places in China (inferring from the experiences of this forum's members) are 40% cheaper than the 100€ I'd have to pay here. If the school pays, even better.
I'm excited how they do x-rays there. I once had it done in Cyprus (a rather civilized country, one would assume) and they didn't use any of these lead jackets made for Western wimps. Not even the operator who didn't bother to leave the room either. But then again, for us exchange students all health care was totally free - who would be small-minded in face of such hospitality?

They don't have the safety stuff here either - and one time I had an X-ray there was even amotorbike sitting in the room. Friends can often come and chat to you while it is happening.

Yeah! And, as we used to say to each other before our flight physicals every six months, "I hate it when he has a hand on each of my shoulders while he is checking my prostate!" "At least he ought to send me flowers, or call the next day."

Here, they use the jackets, leave the room, etc. I have had heaps getting my neck done, and they are safety conscious here. But then, this is a 'good' hospital.

Had my medical done in Xian this Thursday past....interesting to say the least, I went with another teacher and the lady taking the blood couldn't even find EITHER of our veins! She literally SHOVED the needle (big whopper it was!) into the other teacher, then couldn't feel the vein so went on a search and destroy inside her arm! Even out FAO freaked out so much he had to leave the room . For being good girls he took us to a Peking Duck restaurant for lunch ;D. This took about half an hour to do, only because when we arrived they were closing, so they sped us through. Ummmm, now the FAO is pushing to change by visa from L to Z without having to send me to Hong Kong...I hope this can happen, otherwise it's a HUGE expense for the school.....

While you share a cigarette with the doctor. Chris had a wisdom tooth pulled out while we were here. The dentist lit a smoke while waiting for the anesthetic (correct spelling?) to kick in...and offerered Chris one!
