I start looking for a summer job usually in late April. I've never had a problem finding one I liked in the past. I've gotten the salary I like, the huge number of hours that I want, apartment/hotel costs covered and travel covered to and from the city I'll be working in. They've usually given me (as an extra) an apartment/ room to myself. Which is always nice.
This year, I don't know what it is. I've received responses from schools who want to pay 30-45RMB per hour in bigger cities for 45 hour weeks. I make peanuts (they go great with the imported stuff) here in Jingmen, its a pretty good salary for the number of lessons I do each week and for living standards, but I don't get to save much. I am not a big fan of holidays, and enjoy teaching (I grew up on farms so we never got holidays, staying overnight at a friends house was a holiday!!!). But its not enough to save. So I say I want to work lots of hours in the summer with a salary that shows.
Here's the question- Is asking 60-85RMB (depending on the city small city 60, medium sized city 70-75 and the big cities 85) per lesson not good or something?
Sorry just a little frustrated. I get off of work in a week and have no idea of what will happen for the summer. If worse comes to worse, I'll just have to find out if its possible to have my own summer school here in Jingmen.

I think your salary parameters are more than fair. I personally wouldn't work for 60 anywhere in China, even a small town, unless it was someone I really liked and wanted to give a break. Chinese people will want you to work for 30 an hour. And people in hell want ice water...the answer to this absolutely must be NO. I'd leave China first. My minimum wage for freelance work is 150 per. In a small town I'd probably go with 100. Lower than that, and my free time becomes more valuable than the salary. I take Nancy Reagan's advice and just say 'No'. Of course, hot babes in tube tops and hot pants receive tuition with no monetary compensation required. And while I'm doing my grouchy rant, I'd add that I've gotten a load of the Summer Camp (and Winter Camp) jobs from the management side. Personally the only way you could get me into one of these would be to super-glue my gonads to a cannonball and then fire me into the classroom. Long hours and horrible, horrible children.

Long Hours? That's the only reason I actually want to work in the summer or winter camps!!! I love my job here, love the school, most of the time I love all my students, love my teachers blah blah blah.... but I work 16 lessons, in 16 different classes. I have private students almost every night, but find the one on one with students boring.
I trying to find a job for the summer where I can work 36 to 42 hours with students 10 or above, from the beginning of July to mid to late August. I find it a great time to learn new idea's, teaching methods and training ideas. I'm that really annoying person who seems to always have the energy, and that nagging positive attitude about what is going on. I've heard that lots of times.

I guess there are camps and then there are camps...
The ones I experienced could easily have teachers working 25-36 hours per week (not my idea). Many of the teachers only got one day off per week, which they tended to spend lying face-down and whimpering softly.
Also not my idea.

Monkey King- got it and thanks. Will let you guys know if and when I ever get a job this summer.
I've made up my mind, I'm tired of trying to find a good job for the summer working the hours I want to work in a different city. Screw this. I am opening my own summer training school next year. Just need to learn how.
If anyone wants a summer job in 2007, let me know. There a brewery down the road, beer is cheap, food is good.

Well, I finally got a summer position!!!!!!
And its literally in Jingmen's back yard. Just over an hour south of here in good old fashioned Jingzhou. Got a little less on the hours I was hoping, 5-6 hours per day and not 7-8. Hourly wage of 100RMB with a bonus at the end. Its a heck of a lot better than I thought I would get for Hubei! I didn't get transportation. (12kuai bus ride ha ha ha cheaper than a 5km taxi ride!)
Being so close to home means that I will be able to come home once a week at least to take care of my garden. So my mint, dill and fennel I can take care of them pretty easily and harvest seeds in the fall. Mint tea anybody?
