I am going to be coming to China next summer and I plan to teah. My husband is Chinese and we have been married for 3 years, and we both live in the US now. Am I going to have to get a working visa through my employer, or is it possible to get one based on marriage to a Chinese citizen. I have seen many posts about visa troubles through employers, and I do not want to have a visa held over my head if I am not happy with a job. I think it is better to get the working visa on my own with out sponsorship from a company. Also, how does one apply for permanent residency in China, and how long are you required to stay there. I looked at the Chinese embassy website, but did not really see information that would answer my questions. Thanks for any information you may have.

Hey! If you want a WORK (ie Z) visa, that has to come from an employer and requires an invitation letter, etc. etc. etc. You may be eligible for a D visa- permanent residence. I do know you have to be married at least one year; not sure of there is a residency requirement as well. One of our Ayis-Of-The-Week has packed away my Blue Book so I can't look it up at the moment. Best bet is to call or visit your nearest Chinese consulate. Don't bother with a letter or e-mail. I do hear you on not wanting your residence eligibility to depend upon the whims of the crooks and idiots who run businesses, especially schools, here. I'll be standing in line at the visa window on my first anniversary! Oh, and your husband is a very smart man. Why doesn't he know all this? Raoul
