Chinese - Why not the same rate of pay?

You’ve gotta hand it to the han Chinese. Let me just simply set the scene and the situation.

Today, after teaching the obnoxious turds for 4 weeks, I think ….right …… get the teacher’s notes for next week and I’m off……………… cant wait to get home and see my little boy, his mum and crack a coldie or ten. poo, wasn’t it hot today………….. anyway, (m'kay me rona, why am I doin’ this?)

I get to the bus – now that took about 1200 steps (heard about Australia’s 10,000 steps program? – walk about 7.9 km each day to keep fit …ie. ….10,000 steps …… m’kay – they’ve gotta be kiddin’)

…… anyway that’s another story

……. I get to this m'kayin’ bus and …it’s full ……..it’s 38deg. Outside …. No breeze !!!! …. there’s no air con …. Probably 58 deg in the bus!! and the m'kaying bus is chockers … one seat left up the back …..I grab it!!!

I get my seat and this m’kayinly nice fella wants to practice his m’kayinly awful English. I’ve got it all together – I mean ….I’m really super cool and reallllllly nice to this fella …and we go to Baoshan campus (25 minutes away) and he gets off ….

YES!!! YES!!! …no more b.loody practice session

BUT ….no ….no …no….. here comes Chris Wang …………NO !
( I nearly start crying!)
He proceeds to use me as a bloody English sounding board for the next 15 minutes before he abruptly says to me, “I’M GOING TO HAVE A NAP NOW!”

Just prior to this I’ve told him what I think of his comment about him getting the same pay rate to teach English to undergraduates, …. ( the individual nervously chuckles then gets that familiar stupid superior ‘we are the greatest syndrome’ look on his face) …..and
He tells me he’s earning 120,000 Y/ annum from his base employer – Shanghai Uni. and SILC is paying him an additional 30,000/annum for his glorious English teaching.
…………………….…………“ you know …I should be getting the same rate as you ….teaching English …. I’ve got my associate professor position and my masters in Business Studies (chuckles nervously) ….. and ……but that’s where I stop this very intelligent and knowledgeable m'kaywit.

I had a high opinion of him until today – How on earth he thinks he even comes close to me as a teacher of English is possibly ENTIRELY DUE TO THE PROPAGANDA AND INDOCTRINATION OF HIS GOVERNMENT WHO TRULY BELIEVE IN THE SUPER RACE!! ……..zherli …zhongguo!

……………. So anyway ……………. sought of suggested to him that his English language and teaching ability would never ever come close to mine and I think he might have felt a little deflated and dejected.

Heh heh. What's the propoganda line here: "We Chinese have a glorious 5000 year history of teaching English better than experienced teachers who come from places where this languge is spoken, and in spite of the fact that English has existed in recognizable form for less than 600 years."

Fine then.

I'm a greater Confucian scholar then Menicus. Oh, I can't actually read Confucius in modern Chinese, to say nothing of in the origional, but I have decided to believe my own propoganda in spite of glaring facts.

Well, as you know, and as has been shown extensively on CCTV-9, China was ahead of everybody in the Space Race because a thousand or so years ago, one guy strapped himself and lots of large firework rockets to a chair. I have no doubt that Chinese have been opening their mouths and giggling for a good few thousand of their 5 big ones. So we can say they originated the whole idea of tefl, Teaching English as a Funny Language.

Besides which, since when do foreigners dictate Chinese rates of pay. If he wants more money, why should he talk to you?

I have this idea about laughing at foreigners: you're supposed to join in. One is supposed to agree with the Chinese that, oh, how strange and funny-looking I am, and how surprising to see me here, oh, aren't we happy together with this good-natured humour! I'm pretty sure that's why they can laugh at you and claim to be welcoming and friendly at the same time. The thing about the money sounds the same.

This fella was informed ...he was advised
He gloatingly informed me that SILC were paying him 100Y/ hour to teach english - that's nice of them isn't it!! He's as Chinese as HU Flung Dung!!! ...dead set

Anyway, I tell him I've calculated that SILC are paying me ( your ordinary, qualified - take no prisoners, take no BS, english language teacher) ..............- 238rmb/ hr - that figure was arrived at by totalling hours worked and salary plus everything else totalled

I said, "CHRIS, THEY'RE CUTTING YOU BIG TIME - next Monday, go into the boss's office and start thumping on the desk and tell'em ya want more mate!"

I'm afraid that I'm straying a little from the principal thrust here, but I would like to explore for a moment what may be the myth of our Chinese tong2 shi4's making so much less than we do. I get the impression--impression, mind you, inasmuch as this isn't an area of discussion that lends itself to candor--that they are getting a lot of perks. Like the 13th month of salary, extra housing benefits, and what have you. Or am I in strong need of a laxative?

Proust - I thought the same thing. Must be one of those weird expressions they use 'down under'. Here at the saloon it is the euphemism for the four letter word we aren't allowed to use in a public forum on the internet. Where the brains came up with such a word, I have no idea.
