For some weird reason I have been landed with the role of finding laowai for a television production place in Xi'an. If you are here and want to be added to my list please PM me with your location and telephone number.
Please note, although the production company says this will be a long co-operation, I have NO idea how many times any one person or type of person would be offered work.

I'll ask! But do you realise how hard it is to find young blonde women? There is a perception taht all western women are blonde and I can just find them so easily. They are truly few and far between!

No way - I'm hoping they like wise women with variable colour hair!

.....and when you do find one in China, they are usually, definitely, "blonde". On the whole, tho, the Laowei "actors" I have seen in Chinese productions, are usually very bad!!! They are there for their faces, and not for their ability, that's for sure.

So I'll fit right in then. Back on the casting list. Can't wait to tell son no.2 who once starred in a commercial with Mark whatsie's name former test cricketer captain. We have the autograph to prove it.

Bushwa. Everyone knows that all real Westerners are blonde and have blue eyes. Accept no substitutes.
If you have the acting bug, make a beeline for the Shanghai Stars agency. They're the ones that got me the Coca-Cola ad with Zhang ZiYi and the role in The White Countess. They are absolutely the gilt edge agency in China. They rule Shanghai and are also active in Beijing.

And in Xi'an? This mob tell me that they are the biggest company in Xi;an but I have no way of knowing - and do I care? No this is fun for me! And something to add to my ever weirder CV.

Yeah, TV and film work is not that tough to find here for those who keep their ears to the ground. It's a cool thing to do!
I still think my real finest moment here was the infomercial I shot in Changchun for some dodgy local auto-repair school. I had to portray a top foreign technical expert teaching a group of lumpy-looking students about the exciting intricacies of the modern automobile. The students didn't speak word one of English, which was OK because I know almost nothing about car repair. I lectured for about 20 minutes on the relative merits and disadvantages of filling the brake fluid reservoir with salsa, guacamole, or sour cream.
