Hi everyone,
I'm trying to find teachers for the following positions:
2 middle school oral English teachers at Yan Hua Middle School, Yuncheng, Shanxi (salary not specified as yet)
1 middle school oral English teacher at Yuncheng Middle School, Yuncheng, Shanxi (4000RMB/month)
5 university English teachers at Yuncheng University in Yuncheng, Shanxi (3000RMB/month but in the process of negotiating)
2 middle school oral English teachers at Linyi Middle School, Linyi county, Shanxi (4000RMB/month)
I know that you all have sweet jobs that you're satisfied with, but if you know of anyone who's looking for something for August, can you send 'em my way? I'd sure appreciate it, and I'd take a recommendation from you all very seriously!
Thanks!

Gurl, I'll help if I can, but quite honestly I don't know anyone willing to work for salaries like these. Maybe I've been in Shanghai too long...

I know the salary might seem ridiculously low. The selling points are that it's cheap to live here, accommodations are paid for, it's a historical region of China, 3 hours from Xi'an, and it's not a big city.
I'm dying here! This is harder than I thought!

Gurl, have you advertised on That's magazines? Go to www.thatsmagazines.com and write all that stuff up...although there is a limit of about 700 characters that always seems to come up quick. It's easy to echo your ad to the Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou editions. Consider it a writing challenge....it's going to be a tough sell.

Actually, I tried that. I've gotten lots of applicants, but they're all a) unqualified to begin with (initial contact riddled with spelling mistakes, written entirely in caps or not capitalized at all) or b) they disappear after I e-mail them back. I don't get it!
Anyway, thanks for the tip, I'll try it again.

The truth is, most people interested in ESL are boobs. Actually I'm interested in both ESL and ... oh never mind. That thread is on another part of the site. My dean (who initiates all the hiring) sometimes says the same thing: it's hard to get enough interested teachers who seem able to actually teach. We ran one teacher short for months, and with five of us leaving this summer, I'm not sure how our department will fare. Best of luck.

Maybe I'm setting the bar too high. But things bother me, like when people say, "PronOUnciation" instead of "PronUnciation". I kind of think that in order to teach a language well, you need to be able to speak, read, and write the language well.
After all, my role here has been more than an ESL teacher. I've also been support for the students and the local Chinese staff. I've helped my students fight for exam marks, and I've helped the teachers see that the exam questions they use here are terrible. But it takes a special kind of person to be able to look at a sentence and point out the "predicative noun"... and so on.
