Teachers Needed in the Coastal City of Qingdao, 10,000 RMB/month
Dr. Paul's Language School is seeking native English teachers in Qingdao. We're looking for outgoing and dedicated teachers to join our team. Our students are Koreans aged 7 to 18, so you will have the opportunity to explore both the Chinese and Korean cultures while teaching our small and friendly classes. Qingdao is a beautiful and cosmopolitan city, famous for it's clean air, mountains, beaches, seafood and architecture and chosen as the host of the 2008 Olympic sailing competition. Couples are welcome.
Teachers will be asked to teach 20 hours per week, and to spend 6 to 10 hours per week preparing lessons and tests in our offices. We are looking for one-year commitments.
We offer:
*10,000 RMB per month salary. *8,000 RMB bonus upon completion of one-year contract. *A spacious, furnished, modern apartment located downtown with a private bedroom, TV and DVD/VCD player, a kitchen with a stove and refrigerator, washing machine, and a clean bathroom to be shared with one colleague. *7-8 day vacations for Chinese Spring Festival (Feb. 20-28), May Day (May 1-7) and Fall Festival (Oct. 1-8).without salary *Additional 1,000 RMB per month salary to teachers who wish to provide their own housing.

Salary, conditions and LOCATION sound OK. Shared accomm and unpaid Golden Weeks don't. I wonder if this is part of a Korean international school set-up, in which case maybe the pay isn't so great. Probably a good starter for a well qualified [ie, primary or secondary trained] teacher, having trouble finding decent work at home and keen to get into this field. Airfares don't get a mention, which possibly explains the "bonus". And check out the visa situation if following this through. But Qingdao has lots of appeal.

I'm assured that a Z Visa/Residence Permit is indeed provided for this position.
Sounds like a great job to me. Qingdao IS nice...one of the better places in China to be, IMHO. 10K (11K if you get your own apartment) should be a pretty good salary indeed there. I don't know apartment prices in Qingdao, but I would suspect that the extra thousand will go a long way toward getting you out of shared housing. And some schools call it a bonus, some call it airfare reimbursement...who cares what they call it as long as you get it?
China is awash in crappy 4000 RMB/month jobs in nightmare cities. When a job listing rises above the muck, I would hope it gets noticed.
I do agree on the unpaid holidays. Yuck.

There's an update...the advertiser has asked me to point out that they are hiring teachers for 3 different start dates....May 15, July 15, and September 15!

This outfit may not be as advertised!
Dr. Paul's, and their agent Josh, have sent contracts and offered positions to teachers only to cancel them later and after enough time has passed that other options available to those teachers have been rejected. Thus teachers who had confirmed offers from several schools, and who selected Dr. Paul's on the strength of Josh's word over the phone and tendered contract via email are now starting the search process from the beginning.
It is recommended that this school, and this agent, be dealt with cautiously as, given present information (More is promised soon and will be reported here if and when it is forthcomming.) the companies business practices regarding employees is in serious question.

I received a nice call from Josh a few moments ago.
There is no new information beyond confirmation that teachers who were interviewed and offered contracts about two weeks ago have had their contracts cancelled, and their offers withdrawn. Commitments have been made by several teachers on the strength of proffers from Dr. Paul’s delivered by its agent, Josh. The false proffers made to three members of this forum will cause direct and substantial financial damage to each.
Josh represents himself as being caught in the middle (The usual position for an agent in a business deal.) and we have no reason to think circumstances are other than as he describes them. However, he acknowledges that the reputation of Dr, Paul’s and himself personally, have been substantially damaged by this episode. For the moment, at least, Josh explains that he has no options open to him that can repair the damage done.
Raoul’s regrets having been made party to this sad affair. My wife and I have been sucked into this whirlpool ourselves. The episode should serve as a reminder that business dealings in the Middle Kingdom are not based on rules that are even close to what one can expect in countries more accustomed to honest dealings.
Every foreign teacher’s motto must be, “Never trust. Always verify.”
Perhaps we should leave this thread visible as an object lesson for every person interested in what can happen when doing business with schools in China.

I will add to the apology. We can't screen or verify all this stuff, but we still hate it when weasel behavior like this happens.
I'd already been considering getting our forum out of the job ad business. The more I have to deal with these schools the dirtier my hands feel.
This incident may be the last straw.

For what it's worth, I sent this to Josh and his mailing list:
Josh,
this is Raoul from Raoul's China Expat Saloon.
As you know, your positions were advertised on our site. We said nice things; even provided some defense when questions were raised. As a result, I know that our ad generated a number of resumes for Dr. Paul's.
Several of our members received ostensibly firm job offers and had contracts in their hands.
After quite some time, these members received e-mails notifying them that their contracts were being summarily withdrawn. Apparently no reason or explanation was offered, just a curt brush-off.
Of course, by this time the members in question seem to have turned down their other job prospects and now find themselves without jobs.
Can you please tell me what's happening here? Was there some kind of error that means these people are going to receive corrected contracts soon? If not, can I please at least offer them some kind of explanation?
On the surface this appears to be dodgy and/or incompetent behavior of the lowest and shoddiest sort. It's definitely an embarrassment to our site, which tries hard to only feature the best jobs. It will prove much more so to those on the school's side of the equation, there is no question of that.
So, I'm hoping that all is not as it appears, and that if we give it a chance some sort of fix, or at least a viable explanation, will present itself and there will be no need for jihad.
