Just thought I'd start a thread on what kinds of activities everyone does with their classes.
What age groups? what works? what doesn't?
Personally, has a new 'teacher', I find myself stuck at times for new ideas or stuff that is going to sink in.

I'd like to request that if people have some really good lessons/activity ideas, that they could post them over in our "Teacher Resources" area over at NCSR as well. There are instructions on how to submit them here

No I don't think you buggered up. I think there is so much great stuff that you can get from the internet. A lot of us may teach large classes of 60 kids one hour a week, that is the most challenging. I am really looking around for ideas for next school year. When I have more time next week I will post up some of the old tried and tested.

sensational..
I'm in the process of getting my lesson plans organised. It's only in point format at the moment, and it's already driving me bonkers.
my classes range from 50 - 80 students, and they don't have room to move around. I also don't have many resources . There are a lot of awesome ideas out there, I just can't use a lot of them.
I generally work my students though a dialogue of some description, teaching them to speak with expression. I do a little work on pronunciation, tounge twisters and things like that. Then if I have a spare 5 minutes, usually they do a word game on the board. these games work well, gets all the kids excited and they have no choice but to speak English.
I just don't want to do the same things with them this year. I mean, I have some tried and true that they love, I just need to do something else with them.

I printed off a map of Canada, handed it out to all the students, and used pictures on the TV for each province. I taught about some of the history of Canada, famous people, showed some famous music groups.
I also scanned a bunch of my photo's and had the students discuss the photo's they saw and the differences they saw between the photos and what they see in China.

oh, I teach high school students
Another one, I print off a page about sleep and ways to help you get a good nights sleep, tricks to keep you in bed when you have minor insomnia, explaining insomonia and what are the probable factors in causing it.
That lesson leads into the major organs of the body and then the differences between Chinese food groups and Canadian food groups.

Sorry Nate!!! I promise I will post these tomorrow!!!
For all the new teachers out there, going into your classroom remember this. You will make mistakes. You will want to bang your head against the wall. You will pray for a day to be over. You will have problems.
Its ok.
As long as you learn from your mistakes, and ask questions to other foreign teachers, you will realize you are not the only one. I find talking to the teachers of the classes where I have no success with helps me in developing a game plan in dealing with them. I also ask my students what I can change about my lesson to make it better for them. If worse comes to worse, I bring my chair into the class, and we talk about what is going on.
Sometimes its just as simple as the got their test scores back and are unhappy with the results.
I know these sound simple enough, and I hope that no one ever has to have that feeling of you are only there to babysit a class (seriously it happens), and this isn't an activity.
