I tutor a beginner level, 15-year-old, male student who, under normal circumstances, would be any teacher’s dream – he’s always greets me at the door and is ever so polite to me whenever I’m there, his books are always ready and waiting on his desk when I arrive, he pays attention throughout our lessons, he always does all the homework set for him, he never misses a class, etc…
It's all good... right? The problem? I’ve been tutoring him for between 4 to 6 hours per week for the last four months and I haven’t noticed any improvement at all in his English at all! I’ve tried everything I can think of – interesting material, revising lessons over and over again, changing lessons regularly, me doing all the work during lesson, asking him to do all the work during lessons, playing games, revising his school work, doing lesson plans on things he finds interesting – movies, computer games, etc, I’ve even taken him out a few times to places like KFC and Papa John’s Pizza in the desperate hope that he would be inspired to want to speak better English… and still nothing
The worst part is that I’m not his only tutor – he has another teacher that also teaches him between 4 to 6 hours per week so all-in-all, he gets has between 8 to 12 hours of private tutoring per week… and still no improvement
I think he really wants to learn English but for some very bizarre reason, nothing that the other tutor and I teach him seems to sink in – it’s like trying to fill a bottomless well – no matter how much you pour in, you just never seem to be able to draw anything back out
I want so much for his English to improve but I’m fast approaching my wit’s end and would really appreciate any ideas, tips or guidance anyone is able to offer.
