I don't teach much at the near-beginner (as in "can only say a few words...") level...I think this is better done as the realm of Chinese teachers.
However, I do get the odd request to teach at this level. So, do any of you know of a decent and widely-available book at this level?
I've found that New Interchange- INTRO still starts at a bit higher level, and tends to scare these students because it has no Chinese. So what else we got?

The 'Go For It' series is used in Xingcheng middle schools. I've used the first two books (which would be the grade 7 students) effectively with students as young as grade 3. I like them. Colorful texts, starts simply and a wide enough array of topics so that you can add lots of extra activities for reinforcement. I haven't taught adults with these texts, but I think they could work. First book in the series is blue: Second book in the series is yellow (2nd semester of the first year).

I'm using this series in Middle School (different book - green one) and tried to get either of these for a kids beginner class I'm doing. The local bookshops don't have it. They said it is done in a limited run by the publisher just for the schools. Impossible to buy privately!
If you know where to get them please let me know.

How many do you need? They are sold here in the local bookstores. Very common for kids to go through the books before they learn them in school - thus ensuring extreme boredom in the classroom. The idea is to get a jump on all your classmates whose parents DON'T send them to extra English lessons.
The green book is the third in the series - first semester grade 8. Sometimes the books I can buy in the shops aren't the latest printing, but after the first revision the differences are minor.

The first book in the Expressways series is a good for older learners at the beginner level. The only thing is these books are made for people planning on going abroad or already living there.Nevertheless,it's far more suited for older students than the ages I've taught it to.
