Or more specifically, Changyu Brandy...The Foreign English Teacher's Friend. While all other Chinese distilled spirits (and most of the wines) are unspeakably vile, Changyu Brandy is actually pretty tolerable stuff. It ain't exactly yer Remy Martin and I don't think you'd want to sip a big snifter of it straight up, but a couple of shots of it mixed into a glass of cola is decidedly a warm, fuzzy, friendly thing. (Even better with Vanilla Coke! ) At 12 RMB (~ US $1.50) for a big bottle, you can definitely overlook a few rough spots. It's a very passable non-beer buzz at a bargain price...and unlike baijiu in the same price range, it probably won't induce projectile vomiting. And if you really want to impress the other derelicts sleeping outside the train station, you can get the premium grade of Changyu Brandy for 16 RMB (~ US $2.00)! I'm having a bit of fun with this but it seriously is pretty good, especially at that price. If you are teaching in China and you fancy the occasional drop o' the crayture, you really should make Changyu Brandy your friend!

Chinese brandy is vile compared to real brandy but really beats the hell out of any other local spirit I have tried so far. Can only use with a mixer or for lighting fires. I tried brandy alexanders but failed. Go for more robust stuff.
The hangover also seemed more than would normally be for that amount of brandy but it may have just been that it is cheap so we drank more, or faster, or something. Who knows?
