Yes, I try to go beyond that, but dislike baijiu and cigarettes! So do I. It does make things a bit lonelier.

So, don't smoke the cigarettes. Baijiu can be tolerated on occassion, and there are ways to make it at least drinkable. I haven't tried it yet, but I reckon making it into bloody mary's will work. Of course, tomato juice and tabasco seem to be in short supply.

Colour is no impediment to talking to another laowai. Back home my work group consisted solely of murris until the couple of months before I left, so I tend not to see 'colour'.
Here the (narrow) majority of my friends and companions are Asian - again I am comfortable and relaxed with them. I am finding more similarities in their faces with people back home now than when I first moved here. Once I went past the obvious differences, then the similarities are much more evident now.
