Ok, before I get in I need a little advice. I was dead last, last year, and I need to know how to massage the players to get more out of them. I obviously didn't figure it out at all last year. So, if I am going to dedicate my valuable time to the "yahoo see how slow you can load", league I need to know how the heck to play. All advice gratefully appreciated

Well, DS, you basically got a poor batch from the draft. You eventually figured out the ropes and started to make sensible, productive moves, but by then the pickings were too slim, and you were just too far behind.
Just take what you learned last year and apply it from the getgo this time around. And read the news items in the links- alittle homework goes a long way. I never found it much work at all, especially compared to the baseball fantasy league. You did just fine there.
Finally, buy a rabbit's foot. Your big picks pan out or they don't, some of your lower picks overachieve, hopefully enough of them. And then there's injuries...
For those who haven't done a hockey fantasy pool before, here's some guidelines:
1. Your team will consist of real players from the actual NHL; these guys will play for various real tems, but their stats will accrue to you. There are 5 positions: left winger-LF, right winger-RF, center-C; defenseman-D (two on the ice at any given time in hockey, so you need more of them on your team), and goaltender-G.
2. You have more players than active slots; every day you have to bench some of them. Most days you simply sit the guys who don't play that day, but on some days, usually Saturdays, you have to make some tough decisions and sit guys who will be playing... and accruing points.
3. The slots are position-specific, so you have to put that position player into that slot. the 2 exceptions are guys who play more than one position (e.g. C/LW) that can enter more than one given slot; and the utility slot- Util. Anyone other than a goalie-G can take that slot.
4. There is one slot for injured reserve-IR. This allows you, when one of your aces gets badly hurt, to pick a guy to take his place without having to drop the ace guy in the process. But you only have one IR slot...
5. Goalies are the most important: you'll only have 3 to 5 on your team, yet they control 5 of the 11 scoring categories. Next come the centers, who tend to score more than the others.
6. The key is day to day mangement: make sure your starters are the guys playing that day. You can set your roster for each day, and can do this for each individual day in one sitting, as far ahead of time as you like. I always had my rosters set for 5 days in advance- took less time out of my life in the long run.
7. Watch your guys, and when you've watched them long enough, drop your bums and replace them with free agents. Check the free agents available as often as you can: there are great bargains out there, especially early in the season.
8. The trick to a winning team is balance: winning one category won't do the trick. You want a strong showing across the board, and this means a lot of tinkering.
9. Read the news items, both on your players and overview articles such as The Big Board. Little bits of info offer clues to who's under/overrated, who's due to break out, or fall off the map.
10. Watch everyone else's roster moves. Many times there's treasure in your neighbour's trash.
That's all I can think of for now. 8 more people, people!

Drats - when is the draft? I will be in SuZhou for a long week-end starting Thursday afternoon and will not be taking the laptop along with me. I will be back on Sunday night. Might be left with poor pickings if the draft happens any later than 11:30 am tomorrow.

6 teams! We had 7 last year- hope we break that. Eagle: This is an autodraft. We don't have to be present. Yahoo has a default draft preference order- if you like you can switch players up and down the order. I have, and will again before the day. So rest easy, Eagle. DS: When you click 'Edit Draft Order' You will be shown 3 fields. The center field will have the top 25 players (as Yahoo sees it). Click the number one guy so that his name is highlighted, then click the right-arrow button to the right: his name will fly over to the field on the right, in the number one position. Repeat with the other 24 guys (sorry, you can only move one guy at a time- it's a pain). Once the names are over there you canmove them up and down your oreder of preference by clicking on the appropriate arrow buttons to the right of that field. When those guys are in the order you want, go up to the top right of the screen and click the 'Save' button. Now players 26 to 50 will appear in the center. Repeat until you're satisfied/fed up, then go to the top right and hit 'Done'. Easier than it sounds, if a bit of a pain. People, HURRY! Draft time's tomorrow!

What is the point of editing players if there is an Autodraft? There must be a reason if Con is doing it several times a day, but if one doesn't know Ilya Saskatoonavitch from Thug Polanski, I can't see the point.

Well, George, since you're going to go inactive after about 3 games anyway, I guess it's moot.

George, if you read or hear something good about a guy, goose him up a few positions. Otherwise, twiddle a couple of guys randomly, or just let 'er ride. Me, I've raised a few of the players I had last year- I'm sentimental that way. ANNOUNCEMENT: The stupid league was waiting for me to give it permission to autodraft, even though I had set the date. Now it will draft, some time between now... and Wednesday. On the bright side, still a little time to get a couple more people.

You still didn't answer the most important questions and I couldn't find out from the internet. How do we get points. The following is from the League! How much is each category worth (points)?
In a Points League, the league commissioner selects the scoring categories for your league and assigns a value to each category.
From your league overview page, please click the "League Settings" link in the "League Info" box to view your league's configuration.
After each scoring category is a number in parentheses (x). This number is the value associated with that category.
For every on-ice action, points are applied in every scoring category that action relates to. So, if a goal is worth one point in your league and a power-play goal is worth three points, a player scoring a power-play goal would be awarded a total of four (1 + 3 = 4) points. There is NO parenthesis (x) beside the category in our league. CON how do I plan who my players are if I don't know what the categories are worth?? Last year in +/- the minus was worth points but not the +, PLEASE explain. PLEASE!!!

Same as last year, DS. For those new players:
This is a rotisserie league. In each category we get points according to our ranking: the guy with the most penalty minutes, for example, gets 6 points, the second most nets 5, and the last place guy gets only 1. Our points are tallied by adding our points from all 11 categories together.
This means balance. Having 30 more goals than the second place guy will get you 6 points; having 1 more goal than the second place guy will also net you 6 points. To win this league, you need a strongish showing in EVERYTHING, or nearly everything.
The autopick seems to have dealt us all a fair hand. Now let's kick my brother's ass.

How many players do I get to have on my team? I currently have 18 and have placed bids on three through waivers. It appears as though I only have one position open on the team. How many players dressed for a game? I assume that one decides who doesn't play by choosing BN. I ended up with three goalies - should I get another one or two? Questions, questions, questions.

Yer in first place after 1 day, DS, so quit panicking. Go to the league page, then click 'Complete standings' at the top right corner of the standings. That'll give you the complete picture.
Eagle, if you put Bell on the I.R. or dropped him, you'll have a free slot. 3 bids? Every time you get a guy beyond your limit, you'll have to drop someone. Don't worry, you'll get to choose who. 3 goalies when only 2 start any given day is enough. 1 more? maybe; 2 more? Don't be daft.
I had all of 1 guy play so far. Rankings will change violently from day to day in this first week or two. Don't Panic, people. That's just what Ted wants.
